Nyangores River Flooding Displaces Over 100 Families in Bomet County

Bomet, Kenya – The Nyangores River in Bomet County has overflowed its banks, displacing more than 100 families from Raiya and Chebirir villages on the outskirts of Bomet town. The affected residents found their homes suddenly submerged by the floodwaters early this morning.

According to Kenya News Agency, a multi-agency team including Red Cross personnel and security officers promptly began evacuation operations to move families to safer areas. Over 50 families are currently housed in temporary shelters set up in Raiya village, and more have been relocated to nearby churches. Dr. Ahmed stated, “Immediate relocation efforts for families living along the Nyangores River were necessary, and we are now coordinating with the Red Cross to provide them with essential supplies.”

Rescue teams used boats to navigate the flooded areas, focusing on saving trapped children and women from homes cut off by the rising waters. Residents, such as Catherine Soi, expressed gratitude for the swift response, although many lamented the rapid loss of their possessions and livelihoods. Aaron Kirui, a local farmer, highlighted the severe impact on agriculture, noting the submersion of his maize farm and the challenges in caring for his livestock amid the floods.

In Chebirir village, additional evacuations were carried out, with more than 40 individuals taking refuge at Chebiri Primary School. Joseph Sanga, a resident of the village, called for urgent government intervention to prevent a potential hunger crisis among the displaced populations.

Felix Langat, Chief Officer of Public Health and Medical Services, issued a warning about the risk of waterborne diseases due to the stagnant floodwaters. He stressed the importance of preventive health measures, including distributing mosquito nets to prevent malaria.

As Bomet County addresses the flood’s consequences, cooperation between county and national authorities remains crucial to manage the crisis and ensure the continued safety and support of the affected communities.
