Man gets life for raping and robbing his aunt

The SAPS welcomes the life sentence that was handed down to a 26-year-old man for raping and robbing his 51-year-old aunt in Fraserburg, Northern Cape.

The accused and his mother (victim’s sister) were living at his aunt’s house at the time of the incident.

On 17 December 2020 at about 01:00 the victim was sleeping when her nephew hit her on the head and choked her until she lost consciousness.

The victim woke up naked and realized she was raped and robbed of her cellphone, money and other valuables.

She contacted the police and the accused was arrested hours later.

At the time of the incident the accused was still out on parole on a previous rape case and police opposed bail successfully.

On 13 September 2023, the accused was sentenced in the Fraserburg Regional Court and received life for the rape and a further 15 years for the robbery.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lt Gen Koliswa Otola lauds Detective Constable Jacques Nielsen from the Calvinia Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for his meticulous investigation that led to the lifelong incarceration of the accused. “Let us continue to Say No to Gender Based Violence and Femicide- GBVF”, said Gen Otola.
