Uasin Gishu County Sees Economic Growth Through Enhanced Road Infrastructure

UASIN GISHU—The introduction of new roads across all wards in Uasin Gishu County has markedly influenced local livelihoods by bolstering road connectivity and subsequently increasing household incomes. The initiatives, spearheaded by the County Administration, have particularly benefitted the agricultural sector, enabling farmers to efficiently transport their produce—such as Irish potatoes, vegetables, milk, and maize—to various markets.

According to Kenya News Agency, this development initiative has significantly ameliorated transportation challenges, facilitating easier market access and reducing post-harvest losses. Noteworthy among the infrastructure enhancements are the opening of the Welelo road in the Ainabkoi/Olare Ward and the upgrading of the Kewet Road, which now connects to the Burnt Forest town. These roads are vital for the transportation of agricultural goods and have stimulated economic activities in their respective locales.

Local farmers, including those from Kapcher Village, have voiced their relief and satisfaction with the new roads. Before these improvements, villagers, as noted by Philip Kimeli and Jonah Too Sawe, had to rely on rudimentary means like donkeys and tractors for transportation, often resulting in substantial crop spoilage. Now, with the improved road network, transportation costs for goods like milk have significantly decreased, as highlighted by bodaboda operators in Tingwa and Kewet villages, who now enjoy reduced expenses in their daily operations.

Furthermore, the county’s focus extends beyond road construction to include vital infrastructural projects like bridges and box culverts, aiming to fortify economic development and enhance service delivery. The recent completion of the Kapkures-Kipsomba box culvert is a testament to these efforts, promising to support local agriculture, business, and trade while fostering community integration.

Local governance, represented by Governor Dr. Jonathan Chelilim and other officials, has expressed a firm commitment to continuing such infrastructural advancements, emphasizing their pivotal role in economic growth and the enhancement of residents’ quality of life.
