Turkana County Advances in Primary Care Network Development

TURKANA – Turkana County is making significant strides in healthcare, currently ranking 15th in Kenya for its development of Primary Care Networks (PCNs). This ranking underscores the county’s dedication to advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through the establishment and enhancement of PCNs, a core component of the national healthcare strategy aimed at connecting health facilities with community needs for comprehensive primary care.

According to Kenya News Agency, Turkana County has successfully launched seven PCNs and plans to establish additional networks in the Aroo, Suguta, Turkana East, and Turkana South sub-counties. These networks are pivotal in the National Government’s strategy to bolster primary healthcare (PHC), a foundational element for achieving UHC.

The meeting, facilitated by the County Department of Health and Sanitation and supported by AMREF Health Africa in Kenya, convened various health stakeholders to review progress and discuss future directions. Director for Medical Services Ekiru Kidalio emphasized the importance of inclusivity and capacity building among Community Health Workers (CHWs), including community health promoters (CHPs) and assistants (CHAs), to improve PHC service delivery across the county.

Echoing this sentiment, Director for Family Health Gabriel Lopodo highlighted the PCN framework’s role in ensuring the availability and accessibility of quality primary healthcare services. The expansion of PCNs is seen as vital to broadening access to essential healthcare services, aligning with national objectives to attain UHC.

Deputy Director for Primary Healthcare Peter Ekope outlined the department’s plan to accelerate PCN implementation, utilizing strategic communication and advocacy to enhance PHC and PCN initiatives. The involvement of County Health Management Teams and partnerships with organizations such as AMREF Health Africa in Kenya, Kenya Red Cross Society, World Vision Kenya, Feed the Children, WeltHungerHilfe Kenya, and CONCERN Worldwide demonstrates a collaborative effort to advance healthcare access and quality in Turkana.

The concerted efforts in Turkana County to expand and optimize its PCN infrastructure are a testament to the region’s commitment to improving health outcomes and moving closer to the goal of Universal Health Coverage for its residents.
