Tharaka Nithi Governor Urges Vigilance Against Counterfeit Fertilizers

THARAKA NITHI—Governor Muthomi Njuki has issued a stern warning to local farmers against the purchase and use of counterfeit fertilizers, emphasizing the risk they pose to agricultural productivity and crop quality. The caution was articulated during a seed distribution event at Mukuuni cereals stores in the Magumoni ward, where the governor underscored the government’s commitment to providing high-quality, subsidized agricultural inputs.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Ministry of Agriculture ensures that all fertilizers distributed through official channels undergo rigorous inspection processes and meet the standards set by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). He highlighted the dangers posed by substandard products, noting that counterfeit fertilizers often contain deleterious materials such as added stones and dyes, which can significantly impair seed and crop quality.

The governor urged farmers to be discerning in their purchases, advising them to only buy fertilizers that carry the KEBS certification mark. This measure, he assured, would safeguard their investments and contribute to the overall productivity and success of the agricultural sector in Tharaka Nithi.

In his address, Njuki also mentioned the requirement for all fertilizer vendors in the county to register with the Ministry of Agriculture. This registration process facilitates inspections and quality assurance, ensuring that only approved products reach the market.

The distribution of certified seeds in various wards, including Magumoni, Karingani, Mugwe, and Muthambi, is part of the governor’s broader initiative to enhance agricultural output and food security in Tharaka Nithi. Through these efforts, the governor aims to establish a robust framework for sustainable agricultural development, benefiting farmers and the county’s economy at large.
