Parents Encouraged To Support Children’s Education

The Director of Education Reforms and Junior Secondary School (JSS) Programmes at the Ministry of Education, Dr. William Sugut, has asked parents to support their school-going children and collaborate with other education stakeholders to enable the learners to acquire good academic grades.

While presiding over a prize-giving ceremony for the 2022 Form Four candidates of Nyaikuro Secondary School in Nyamira County, Sugut lamented that many parents lag behind in meeting their obligation to ensure smooth learning for their children without any interruptions.

He said that operations in many learning institutions have been incapacitated due to some parents’ failure to pay school fees in good time, which compelled school administrators to constantly send defaulters home so that the institution’s operations are sustained.

The Director said, ‘The fabulous results we are celebrating today were only made possible because the key stakeholders, who are the respective parents of the school, fully supported their children’s cause by paying their school fees on time and providing other essential requirements, be they academic-related or personal effects to ensure seamless learning, throughout the four-year course.’

He advised parents to accept the sad reality that the school fee waiver due to the effects of COVID-19 in 2020 has since been lifted, despite the current tough economic times, and they must therefore plan early enough how they will be paying school fees for their children for them to be retained in school and ultimately post good results.

‘Apart from paying school fees promptly, you also have the cardinal responsibility of inculcating the right values, which will build acceptable character and behaviour in your children, regulating their use of social media while on holiday, and monitoring the online sites they access to protect them from being lured into criminal activities and other social vices, or worse, falling prey to online abuse,’ the director added.

Sugut congratulated both the administrators and teachers of Nyaikuro Secondary School for their tireless efforts in ensuring that their students recorded excellent performances, translating into a 100 per cent transition to the university.

All the 197 candidates who sat for their 2022 KCSE Exam at Nyaikuro Secondary qualified for direct university admission as of this month, with the school having posted a mean of 8.675.

He challenged the school to improve even further, even as they strive to attain their new set mean target of 9.0.

On his part, the school’s Chief principal, Mr. Job Rasugu, said they have put strategies in place to keep on excelling, despite some logistical challenges facing the school.
