Pô Health District Receives Support for Lymphatic Filariasis Patients

PÔ – In a notable effort to combat Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), the Vision Nouvelle Association, in collaboration with Speak Up Africa, provided washing kits to lymphatic filariasis patients in the Pô health district on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. The initiative, which coincides with World NTD Day, aims to alleviate the suffering of those affected by this debilitating condition.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the executive director of the Association, the initiative marks two years of commitment by the organization alongside the health department to contribute to the fight against NTDs. This effort focuses on empowering grassroots populations in mobilizing resources for the management of lymphedema cases.

The ceremony, presided over by Auguste Kinda, the High Commissioner of Nahouri province, underscored the significance of community involvement in tackling NTDs. Kinda highlighted the day as an opportunity for societal actors to pledge ongoing support for NTD victims.

Dr. Anata Soré, the regional director of Health and Public Hygiene for the Center-South region, emphasized the irreversible impact of NTDs on populations. She assured that the resources provided would directly benefit the patients.

In a remarkable display of community support, the populations and special delegations from the communes of Pô and Tiébélé contributed over one million CFA francs to aid lymphatic filariasis patients within the Pô health district. This financial assistance is seen as a step towards improving patient care and fostering social cohesion within the communities.

The event concluded with a demonstration of how to wash the limbs of a lymphatic filariasis patient, highlighting the practical support offered by the washing kits.

The health services in Nahouri province report approximately 200 individuals suffering from lymphatic filariasis, underscoring the critical need for such supportive initiatives.
