Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre Meets WFP Regional Director to Discuss Food Security and Humanitarian Aid

Mogadishu – The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre, hosted a meeting with Michael Dunford, the World Food Programme (WFP) Regional Director for Eastern Africa, at his office. The primary focus of their discussion was food security, humanitarian interventions, and the long-term socio-economic development of vulnerable Somali households.

According to a news release by the Somali National News Agency, Prime Minister Barre expressed appreciation for WFP’s ongoing efforts in Somalia and emphasized his government’s commitment to closely coordinate and cooperate with the organization. The aim is to build resilience among the communities that are most at risk.

Michael Dunford also conveyed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Somali government for their sustained collaboration with the WFP. He particularly noted the government’s role in preventing a potentially catastrophic famine, which could have led to a massive humanitarian crisis in Somalia.

The meeting underscores both parties’ dedication to tackling some of the most pressing issues facing Somalia, including food insecurity and the need for effective humanitarian interventions.
