Kericho Entrepreneur Donates Shelter to Local Bodaboda Operators

KERICHO, Kenya — The boda boda operators of Tebs area, located at the periphery of Kericho town, have recently received a significant boost in their working conditions thanks to a generous donation from a local businessman. A newly erected shed now provides them with a sheltered space, enhancing their daily operations and service to the community.

According to Kenya News Agency, Housing, and Physical Planning, Ms. Betty Chebet, the shed, valued at Sh280,000, was constructed adjacent to Tebs View Court in the serene Midwest Estate. This initiative not only marks a substantial improvement in infrastructure for the boda boda operators but also exemplifies the potential of public-private partnerships in community development.

During the inauguration of the shed, Ms. Chebet emphasized the importance of such contributions and encouraged other community members and entrepreneurs to collaborate with the county government in similar ventures, aiming to support the welfare of boda boda operators throughout Kericho.

The benefactor, Amarjit Sagoo, who is the director and owner of Sagoo Motors Company, expressed his intent behind the project, stating that the shelter at Tebs stage would foster a more accommodating and efficient environment for both the operators and their clientele.

David Talam, representing the boda boda riders as the Tebs area stage secretary, acknowledged the shed’s impact, highlighting the challenges they faced during adverse weather conditions. Before the construction of the shed, the absence of a proper shelter had significantly hampered their ability to work, especially during rain, affecting their livelihoods. Talam further noted that the new facility offers protection not only from the elements but also contributes to the safety of the operators, referencing past incidents near their previous location.

This development is seen as a step forward in recognizing and enhancing the boda boda sector’s role in the local economy, providing a model for how community and business leaders can work together to improve working conditions and safety for these essential service providers.
