Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement regarding the submission by Odessa Authorities of a nomination file for the inscription of the historic centre of Odessa on the UNESCO World Heritage List (14.10.2022)

Greece welcomes the submission, by Odessa Authorities to UNESCO offices, of the nomination file for the inscription of Odessa’s historic centre on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Greece supports this nomination, which was highlighted by the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his speech to the UNESCO Executive Board on October 11, 2022.

As is well-known, Odessa is of particular importance to Greece, as it is inextricably linked to the history of our country and the Greek diaspora in Ukraine.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias expressed our country’s active support for this nomination during his second visit to Odessa on July 12, 2022.

At the same time, he attended the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Consulate General of Greece in Odessa and the Odessa State Archives for the digitization of Greek-interest archives with Greek funding.
