Burkina Faso’s Tengandogo University Hospital Receives Advanced Equipment for Cardiac Surgery

OUAGADOUGOU – The Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) of Burkina Faso has made a significant contribution to the country’s healthcare sector by donating an extracorporeal circulation machine to the Tengandogo University Hospital Center (CHU-T), marking a pivotal advancement in cardiac care capabilities within the nation.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the donation is aimed at enhancing the technical platform for cardiac operations in Burkina Faso. Dr. Adama Sawadogo, a cardiovascular surgeon at CHU-T, highlighted the importance of this latest generation device, stating it would enable the hospital to perform beyond routine cardiac surgeries, potentially leading to complex operations including heart transplants in the future.

Since its installation at the end of October, the extracorporeal circulation machine has already been instrumental in successfully conducting open-heart surgeries on 40 patients, as reported by Dr. Sawadogo. This development not only demonstrates the immediate impact of the donation but also signifies a monumental step forward in the country’s medical capabilities.

Dr. Ousmane Bougouma, President of the ALT, remarked that with this new machine, Burkina Faso now ranks as the second country in the sub-region equipped with the technical capacity for performing open heart surgeries. He also pointed out that the availability of such advanced medical equipment locally would reduce the necessity for medical evacuations abroad, resulting in significant cost savings for the state.

The Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Dr. Robert Kargougou, extended his gratitude towards the President of the ALT for the strategic investment in the CHU-T, emphasizing the impact this will have on improving healthcare delivery and outcomes for patients with cardiac conditions in Burkina Faso.
