Ugenya Advocates for Visibility and Support of Children with Disabilities

UGENYA, Kenya — In a bid to challenge societal norms and promote inclusivity, Kenyans are being encouraged to acknowledge and support children with disabilities by enrolling them in specialized rehabilitation institutions. The call to action was articulated by National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) trustee, Prof Julia Ojiambo, who voiced concerns over the persistent issue of families concealing their disabled children rather than seeking available assistance.

According to Kenya News Agency, Speaking at the inauguration of a new dormitory at St. Sylvester Anyiko special school for intellectually challenged children, Prof Ojiambo highlighted the collaborative efforts of government entities and religious organizations to combat this stigma. The newly opened facility, funded by NFDK and outfitted by the Safaricom Foundation, represents a step forward in addressing the infrastructure needs crucial for the care and education of these children.

During the event, school headteacher Lillian Luta acknowledged the significant impact of the new dormitory, which will enable the institution to accept more students. However, she also underscored the pressing need for improved water access within the school. Currently, the students, particularly vulnerable due to their conditions, must rely on external boreholes, a situation that poses both logistical and safety concerns.

Luta’s appeal for additional support, such as the installation of a borehole or rainwater harvesting systems, underscores the ongoing challenges faced by institutions dedicated to serving children with disabilities. The overarching message of the event was clear: embracing these children and providing them with the necessary resources and opportunities is not only a moral imperative but a societal responsibility.
