President Ruto reiterates commitment to revive Kenya’s economy

NAIROBI— President William Ruto has expressed optimism that Kenya’s economy will look up in the coming months, as his administration actualises its economic recovery agenda.

Speaking during a thanksgiving and Christmas Celebrations Church Service at the Eldoret Sports Club in Uasin Gishu County, the head of state said his government will focus on taming the huge debt burden, by encouraging Kenyans to save more and in turn lending the government to actualise its development agenda.

“Let us first put the economy of the country on the right footing. We cannot build the economy from borrowed money, funds that the countries we are borrowing from saved,” he stated.

The President further revealed that the country has been using 65pc of its revenue to pay debts noting that the government is optimistic of increasing revenue collections by 20pc in the current financial year.

Promising to unify Kenyans, he termed the 2022 election a unique one from the peace that prevailed, saying the elections set a new standard that is devoid of tribal politics.

Ruto at the same time silenced his critiques on the state of economy saying there is need to change the country’s current borrowing trends and policies if the country is to achieve economic independence.

The President reiterating his administration’s agenda of bringing the cost of living down through increased production of agricultural produce to feed the country.

He said more than 400,000 tonnes of fertiliser will be distributed from January promising to further reduce the price which is currently at Ksh3,500.

“We sold fertiliser to farmers at Ksh3, 500 but we intend to further reduce the cost in January,” he said

Ruto also asked the religious leaders to continue praying for the country noting the new government was formed through prayers.
