Oshakati Court Remands Accused of Raping Four Minors, Case Postponed for Further Investigation

Oshakati — Israel Nuuyoma, a 23-year-old accused of raping four minors in Ongwediva, was remanded in custody following a brief appearance in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

According to a new release by NAMPA, Magistrate Mozay Jansen postponed the case to April 25, 2024, for further investigation and for the defendant to obtain legal aid. State prosecutor Yeukai Kangira opposed the granting of bail, citing incomplete investigations and the fact that all victims are minors under the age of 14.

“The accused person faces serious offences and we fear abscondment; he [allegedly] committed the offences since February and he will abscond as he has been on the loose,” Kangira stated in court.

Kangira also revealed that the suspect has a total of eight cases pending against him. Nuuyoma had also appeared in court the previous Thursday for an unrelated case of housebreaking allegedly committed in 2022, and was denied bail in that matter as well. That case has been remanded to February 8, 2024, for the setting of a trial date.

The accused was reportedly arrested last Friday after being identified by the four minors during a parade identification.
