Roots Rabat: “Taane”, a Malian film that highlights a fighter woman

Rabat, March 18, 2023 (AIB)- The last event of the 1st edition of the Pan-African Cinema Days was the screening of the film “Taane” on Thursday evening at the Renaissance cinema in Rabat. A film that highlights a fighter woman who will fight for her son to marry the girl he loves.

The film “Taane” by Malian director Alioune Ifra N’Diaye tells the story of a brave lady who knows her rights and duties well in the town of Sélingué, whose son falls in love with the only daughter of “Monsieur embittered”.

The latter will oppose the union of these two lovers, on the pretext that the boy is disabled. Against all odds, “Taane” manages to unravel the mystery of “Emittered Monsieur” and does everything possible to get Foussyni and Zeina to marry. Which was done, to everyone’s delight.

The film was followed by the Moroccan public, the participants in Roots Rabat but also by a strong Malian community living in Rabat headed by the Ambassador of Mali to Morocco Mohamed Mahmoud Ben Labat.

The latter congratulated the director, saying that there are many lessons to be learned from the film. “In Mali, we make a committed art that always allows us to highlight our identity, to preserve our independence,” he said.

The director Alioune Ifra N’Diaye expressed his satisfaction on the strong mobilization and the good reaction of the public including a strong Malian community residing in Rabat.

“ We need to renew our stories. Today’s world requires us to reinvent ourselves and the main character is a model citizen reinvented and adapted to the challenges of today’s world,” he underlined.

Mr. N’Diaye explained that “80% of the funding for this film was raised by crowdfunding from Malians who donated money between 10,000 FCFA and 5 million FCFA to be able to subsidize the film”.

“I didn’t have many problems in directing because the young generation of filmmakers accompanied me in terms of technicians and other cinema trades,” he said.

The film’s lead actress Fatoumata Coulibaly plays the role of a role model and fighter in the film who motivates other women to fight. She explained that it is her daily struggle even outside the screens. “In my everyday life, I make women aware of their rights and duties,” she said.
