Meru Residents Encouraged to Plant Trees Amid Rising Seedling Demand

Meru, Kenya – The demand for tree seedlings has seen a notable increase in Meru County, driven by the heavy rains in the region. Stephen Ntara, a local trader and chairman at a tree seedlings premise in Meru town, reported an uptick in customers, including those from neighboring counties like Tharaka Nithi and Isiolo. This surge in interest is in line with the President’s directive to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.

According to Kenya News Agency, However, Ntara observed a decrease in sales quantities this season compared to previous rainy periods. He attributed this drop to the current high cost of living, which has led people to prioritize basic needs over purchasing tree seedlings. “People are willing to buy and plant trees, but the tough economic times are a constraint,” he said.

Ntara mentioned that his daily earnings have significantly reduced, from as high as Sh30,000 to as low as Sh1,000 on a bad day. Orders from customers, organizations, and schools, which would typically boost business, are now scarce.

Moses Kinoti, another trader with decades of experience in the business, shared his journey and how the trade has supported his family and farm activities. He noted that grafted fruit trees like Hass avocado, mango, and pawpaw are the top sellers, followed by wood, timber, and flower seedlings.

Kinoti urged government entities to support their business by purchasing seedlings for distribution to citizens, especially during the rainy season, to meet the 2032 tree planting target. Customer Paul Mwenda suggested that the government provide tree seedlings to citizens, as the increased prices and economic challenges make it difficult for many to afford them.
