Siaya County Seeks Grassroots Security Solutions Amid Rising Crime

MOLO – The leadership of Siaya County is advocating for the establishment of community-based vigilante groups in response to what they consider inadequate police action against the rising tide of local crime. Governor James Orengo and Alego/Usonga Member of Parliament Samuel Atandi expressed their concerns and proposed solutions at a fundraising event at the Hono Trading Centre, aimed at supporting families victimized by recent robberies.

According to Kenya News Agency, the proposal for vigilante groups arises from a series of incidents that have left the community feeling vulnerable and unprotected. Governor Orengo criticized the police for their alleged promptness in handling minor offenses, where they might benefit, compared to their response to serious crimes. The leaders assert that the creation of youth vigilante groups, operating in conjunction with local authorities, could provide the necessary reinforcement to combat the security challenges faced by residents.

The MP Atandi pointed out the absence of progress since a local security meeting promised increased patrols following a deadly attack three weeks prior. The leaders are calling for intervention from national authorities, including Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome and Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki, to prioritize the restoration of order and the rule of law in Siaya.
