Body of girl who drowned at Muhopi found

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Kavango East Region on Monday found the body of an 11-year-old girl who drowned after the canoe she was in, capsized at Muhopi village.

NamPol crime investigations coordinator in the region, Deputy Commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu told Nampa on Tuesday three minor children aged 13 (girl), 11 (boy) and the 11-year-old victim were traveling from Angola back to Namibia via canoe.

The three children went to Angola on Sunday to visit relatives there, he explained.

“On their way back they encountered a strong storm wind causing the 11-year old boy who was paddling to lose control of the canoe, which capsized. The 13-year-old girl and the boy were rescued by bystanders who witnessed the incident. However, the bystanders did not manage to save the other girl and she drowned,” Kanyetu said.

She could not be found that day, however the search for her continued on Monday and her body was retrieved around 13h00.

The deceased has been identified as Stefanie Nangura Kangoro and her next of kin were informed.

Her body was taken to the Rundu State Hospital mortuary and police investigations into the matter continue.
