SAFA President Remembers Late Sello Rabothatha

JOHANNESBURG – Dr. Danny Jordaan, President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), has expressed his condolences over the passing of former Sowetan Sports Editor Sello Rabothatha.

According to South African Football Association, Rabothatha died at his East Rand home on Wednesday, 15 November 2023, at the age of 68.

Influential Role in South African Sports Journalism

Rabothatha, noted for his contribution to sports journalism in South Africa, was one of the three Sowetan Sports journalists who coined the name “Bafana Bafana” as South Africa rejoined FIFA in the early 1990s. His colleagues Molefi Mika and the late S’Busiso Mseleku were also instrumental in this development.

Dr. Jordaan reminisced about traveling with Rabothatha during the FIFA World Cup bids in 2006 and 2010. He praised Rabothatha for his intelligence, patriotism, and forthrightness, particularly in advocating for South Africa’s capability to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Dr. Jordaan highlighted Rabothatha’s role in mentoring many of today’s sports journalists, leaving behind a significant legacy in the field.
