Islamic Summit in Gambia Concludes with Adoption of ‘Banjul Declaration’

BANJUL — The 15th Islamic Summit Conference concluded on Sunday, May 5, 2024, with the adoption of the ‘Banjul Declaration’. The event, spanning two days, was marked by discussions on enhancing cooperation and addressing global crises affecting the Islamic community. The conference drew heads of state and government officials from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states, alongside dignitaries from non-member nations.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the summit emphasized solidarity and the need for dialogue to resolve disputes peacefully. The ‘Banjul Declaration’ particularly focused on the situation in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and condemning the ongoing aggression. It also stressed the importance of international recognition of Palestinian statehood as per the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital. The declaration highlighted the need for supporting Muslim minorities facing persecution globally and reiterated the commitment to fight Islamophobia, including the endorsement of international resolutions for combating religious intolerance. Additionally, the summit acknowledged contributions from various OIC member states in advancing the interests of the Muslim world on the international stage.
