Three males apprehended for alleged illegal mining and contravention of Immigration Act

Three male suspects were nabbed on Thursday 29 June 2023 at about 22:00 by members of the Provincial Illegal Mining Task Team and Modikwa Protection Service for alleged illegal mining in the Sekhukhune District.

Police were conducting disruptive operations on illegal mining activities at Burgersfort policing area in Winterveld Farm following a tip-off by a members of the community about the illegal mining activities that were busy taking place in the area and immediately rushed to the crime scene.

Police pounced on the suspects upon their arrival at the scene and three males were apprehended for illegal mining. During the arrest, police confiscated ten generators and five jackhammers with a total value of R125,000.00.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were illegal foreigners and charges of contravention of the Immigration Act were added during their arrests.

The Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant, General Thembi Hadebe hailed the teamwork by all relevant stakeholders.

The suspects aged between 21 and 31 are expected to appear before Burgersfort Magistrates’ court soon facing charges of illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act.

Police investigations are continuing.
