‘Consume local month’: ‘Consuming local is an act of national sovereignty’, calls on the Prime Minister

The Prime Minister, Dr. Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélèm de Tambèla, chaired the opening ceremony of the 4th edition of the ‘Month of local consumption,’ this Thursday, October 12, 2023, in Ouagadougou. He invited the Burkinabè to remember that ‘consuming locally is an act of national sovereignty’.

‘What strategies to stimulate the consumption of local goods and services in the UEMOA area? ‘, it is under this theme that the 4th edition of the ‘Consumers Local Month’ is being held, from October 12 to 14, 2023. The objective of this activity is to increase the consumption of local products, in order to promote the development endogenous.

At the opening ceremony of this meeting, the Prime Minister, Dr Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélèm de Tambèla paid tribute to all the actors in the value chains of the local product and service sectors, namely producers, processors, and the distributors.

Moreover, he made it known that in a context like ours marked by an imposed war, it is imperative to count on our own resource
s to meet the major challenges of food security and economic development through the development of our potential in terms of of local products and services.

As part of a paradigm shift in terms of economic model now oriented towards an endogenous development model, he called for making the production, processing and consumption of local products and services a priority, the only guarantee of real economic independence.

Aware of the importance of the potential of local products and services that Burkina Faso abounds for the national economy, he maintained that the Government spares no effort to undertake initiatives for the promotion of these products.

As part of the incentive measures for the consumption of local products, he affirmed that more than 483,000,000,000 CFA francs from the national budget were devoted to institutional purchases of local products for the period 2017 to the first half of 2023.

‘To these measures to encourage the consumption of local products by public administration structures,
we must add the consume local initiative, which has retained more than fifty shopping centers in the cities of Ouagadougou, Bobo- Dioulasso and Koudougou for the pilot phase, the objective of which is to have specific departments dedicated to the distribution of local products,’ he explained.

Regarding the promotion of made in Burkina, he noted that some products have been labeled, notably the Faso Dan Fani loincloth, Kôkô Dunda, shea butter, bicycle chicken and the Saponè hat.

To this, he added the 100 certified products and 1000 cost-shared certified products to the NBF national standard.

Regarding regulatory measures, he cited the issuance of the decree promoting the generalized port of Faso Dan Fani and Kôkô Dunda with a pilot phase for this 2023-2024 school year in the cities of Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso and Sabou .

‘The tree must not hide the forest, the potential exists, measures are taken to promote local products, but to make the slogan ‘Let’s consume Burkinabè’ a reality, the support and suppo
rt of all remains strongly anticipated and this must be a civic duty in view of the issues attached to it,’ underlined the Prime Minister. This is why he invited the Burkinabè to remember that ‘consuming local is an act of national sovereignty’.
