70,000 Households To Be Enlisted In Health Cover

Kiambu County Government and the National Health Insurance Fund signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Tuesday that will grant enhanced health coverage to 70,600 households in the county.

This is part of Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s plan to implement a Universal HealthCare programme that is scheduled to be unveiled on Thursday next week.

The scheme will see the county government pay all premiums for homes totaling roughly 280,000 individuals, and the coverage will include inpatient, outpatient, maternity, chronic diseases, and final expense coverage.

Speaking during the signing of the MOU at the County Headquarters, Wamatangi said a second phase of beneficiary registration targeting an additional 70,000 households, particularly those at the bottom of the vulnerable spectrum, would be carried out.

‘We have provided funding for the programme to ensure its sustainability, which is geared towards favouring those at the bottom of the pyramid,’ he said.

NHIF Acting CEO Samson Kuhora said their partne
rship with Kiambu County was the first and most significant one they have signed with a devolved administration.

He assured that the County Administration and NHIF would see the second round of beneficiary registration begin immediately and target the additional 70,000 households, mainly in the most vulnerable areas, by the end of next year.
