Germany Funds Expansion of Water Treatment Plants in Windhoek

WINDHOEK: In a significant move to enhance Namibia’s water sector, the German Government, through the KfW Development Bank, signed a financing agreement with the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises for the rehabilitation and expansion of the Gammams and Otjomuise water treatment plants. The agreement, worth N.dollar 1.26 billion, was formalized on Wednesday. The Ministry of Finance confirmed that the project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.

The goal of this project is to improve Windhoek’s potable water supply by upgrading the current wastewater treatment capacities. This initiative aligns with the long-term strategies to ensure water security in Windhoek and the central area of Namibia. Once completed, the upgraded facilities at the Gammams and Otjomuise treatment plants will enhance water quality and provide additional feedwater for a second direct potable reclamation plant. The signing of the concessional financing agreement was attended by Finance Minister Ipumbu Shiimi, KfW Country Director Beatrice Lucke, Urban and Rural Development Minister Erastus Uutoni, and NamWater Chief Executive Officer Abraham Nehemia.
