Eastern Region Authorities Intensify Fight Against Illicit Activities

Eastern Region – Authorities in the Eastern Region have ramped up efforts to combat a range of illegal activities, including counterfeit and illicit alcohol, drug trafficking, banditry, cattle rustling, and the smuggling of illegal immigrants.

According to Kenya News Agency, Regional Commissioner Paul Rotich reported that the crackdown on illicit liquor, initiated following orders from Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua last year, has started showing positive results. The campaign has significantly reduced the proliferation of counterfeit and illicit brews, which have been linked to numerous health complications, unproductivity, and even deaths among consumers. Rotich emphasized that the battle against these illegal activities is ongoing and called for public support in sharing information to help combat the illicit liquor trade.

Speaking from his office on Friday, Rotich also highlighted ongoing security operations along the Meru-Isiolo border aimed at eradicating livestock rustling, a growing problem in the region. These rustling activities have led to lethal confrontations, resulting in deaths and destruction of property. To address this, the authorities have deployed National Police Reservists (NPR) to work alongside other security agencies to restore peace and order in the region.

The Regional Commissioner noted that these operations have led to the recovery of stolen livestock and the apprehension of suspected rustlers. In addition to these efforts, several individuals have been arrested in connection with drug trafficking and the smuggling of illegal immigrants into the country.

Furthermore, Rotich revealed ongoing collaboration efforts with counterparts in the Rift Valley Region to address highway banditry. This collaborative approach follows a recent incident near Sereolipi in Samburu County along the Isiolo-Marsabit Road. Although the incident occurred in a neighboring region, it significantly impacts residents of Marsabit and Moyale in the Eastern Region, who frequently use this route.

These intensified operations by the Eastern Region authorities reflect a comprehensive strategy to address a spectrum of illegal activities, aiming to enhance security and lawfulness in the region.
