PRESIDING OFFICERS OF PARLIAMENT TO TABLE PARLIAMENT’S BUDGET VOTE

The Speaker of the National Assembly (NA), Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Mr Amos Masondo, will tomorrow table Parliament’s budget vote.

Parliament’s budget vote seeks to outline funding on oversight, law-making, public involvement and international relations programme. It further provides an account of the previous spending of the allocated budget.

Parliament’s budget allocation brings to life the oversight role of Parliament which protects the public purse. Parliament’s constitutional role is to detect and prevent abuse, prevent illegal and unconstitutional budgetary conduct on the part of government, to ensure that budgetary operations of the government are transparent, and it holds the government answerable on how taxpayers’ money is spent.

Parliament’s budget vote debate will be tabled at 2 pm tomorrow in hybrid plenary sittings of both the NA and the NCOP. The NA’s budget vote will be preceded by two hybrid mini-plenary sessions as follows:

Budget Vote 25: Department of Justice and Constitutional Development

Date: Tuesday, 30 May 2023

Time: 10:00 – 12:00

Venue: Good Hope Chamber and virtual platform.

Budget Vote 19: Department of Social Development

Date: Tuesday, 30 May 2023

Time: 10:00 – 12:00

Venue: M46 (Marks Building) and virtual platform.

The NA hybrid plenary sitting will also consider the following committee reports:

Report of the Standing Committee on Finance of Draft Notice on Determination of Remuneration of Independent Constitutional Institutions

Report of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance of Draft Notice on Determination of Remuneration of Independent Constitutional Institutions.

The NCOP will also deal with three departmental policy debates, policy debate on budget vote 28 (Police), policy debate on budget vote 21 (Civilian Secretariat for the Police Service) and policy debate on budget vote 24 (Independent Police Investigative Directorate).
