Kenya Achieves Adequate Food Production Following Government Interventions, Says Cabinet Secretary Linturi

NAIROBI—Agriculture and Livestock Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi applauded Kenyan farmers for their role in ensuring the country’s food security during the past rainy season. Speaking at a fundraiser in Riiji Catholic Church, Central Imenti, Linturi highlighted the effective use of fertilizer subsidies and other government measures that have led to sufficient food production for both consumption and sale.

According to Kenya News Agency, the government faced significant challenges with high food prices and shortages when it came into power. These challenges prompted several strategic interventions aimed at revitalizing agriculture. “Upon gaining power, we faced high food prices due to scarcity, prompting interventions and encouraging farmers to return to their farms for increased food production. Hence, today I stand here to congratulate them for heeding our call and announcing that we now have enough food for the country,” Linturi stated.

He further detailed plans from his ministry to sustain and enhance food production, which he believes will help tackle the persistent issue of high living costs. Additionally, Linturi urged farmers to take advantage of the current rainfall to boost their output. He also noted the benefits of the rains in supporting increased hydropower production, which he expects will reduce production costs significantly.
