AIU Vice Chancellor Encourages Youth to Lead in Environmental Conservation

Karen, Kenya – Africa International University (AIU) Vice Chancellor, Prof. James Nkansah-Obrempong, has called on young people to become active stewards of the environment.

According to Kenya News Agency, youth involvement in activities like tree planting and clean-up drives is crucial in combating the effects of climate change, including droughts and floods, which are prevalent not only in Kenya but globally. He emphasized this during a tree planting event at St Mary’s Karen Primary School and Karen chief’s compound, where 300 seedlings were planted.

The VC highlighted AIU’s commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement. The university has initiated a program to adopt three schools to mentor students in values, careers, and environmental management. This initiative aims to nurture responsible citizenship and active participation in community development activities. Furthermore, Prof. Nkansah-Obrempong mentioned AIU’s collaboration with Equity Bank in tree planting endeavors, reflecting the institution’s dedication to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

AIU, which serves about 2500 students, offers diverse academic programs including Theology, Social Sciences, Development Studies, and the Institute of Study of African Realities, focusing on environmental issues and community engagement. Karen Acting Chief George Nyachiro also spoke at the event, expressing the need for more seedlings to achieve the local target of planting 600 trees. He pointed out the ample space available in educational institutions and homes for this purpose, especially during the current rainy season.
