Kenyan Government Outlines Comprehensive Development Plan for Nyanza Region

Kisumu – The government has unveiled an extensive development agenda aimed at revitalizing the economic potential of the Nyanza region. The projects cover a range of sectors, including infrastructure, the blue economy, and agriculture, and are designed to create employment opportunities and boost the local economy.

According to a new release by Kenya News Agency, the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, the government has prioritized completing all stalled road projects in the region to improve market accessibility for local products, including fish. Additional projects include the construction of fish landing bays at beaches in Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori counties. These new facilities will aid local fishermen with fish processing and storage, enhancing their ability to find markets.

Owalo further indicated that the government is making efforts to rejuvenate the sugar industry, which has been in decline, affecting the livelihoods of millions who rely on it. The government has written off a Sh. 117 billion debt for the sugar factories and is actively seeking investors to revitalize these enterprises.

During his speech at Nomiya Church in Kisumu, Owalo also revealed plans to expand the Kisumu International Airport to facilitate direct exports of fish and other regional products. The airport will be equipped with a Cargo Unit, complete with cold storage facilities, to support export trade.

President Dr. William Ruto is committed to transforming the Nyanza region, which has faced developmental setbacks over the years. “When the President was here recently, you saw him launch various development projects that were going to transform this region. He will be back to launch more projects,” Owalo said. The Cabinet Secretary urged residents to collaborate with the government to realize meaningful development in the area, emphasizing the importance of unity now that the elections are over.
