Kirinyaga County Launches Community Health Promoters Program

Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County – Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru has initiated a significant healthcare development by flagging off 1,205 Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and distributing 854 essential kits. The event, held at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital grounds, marks a crucial step in enhancing primary healthcare services in the region. According to Governor Waiguru, this program aims to reduce the burden on hospitals by addressing minor ailments at the community level, aligning with the goals of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

According to Kenya News Agency, The governor outlined the role of CHPs as a fundamental aspect of the county’s healthcare delivery system. They serve as the primary point of contact for about 100 households each, totaling approximately 500 individuals. These promoters are linked to the nearest health facility, enabling them to deliver healthcare services efficiently within their communities.

Governor Waiguru emphasized that bringing healthcare services closer to the people allows communities to actively participate in identifying their health needs and contributes to the planning and delivery of services. This approach is expected to play a vital role in maintaining community health and well-being.

The services offered by CHPs, as detailed by the governor, include handling minor medical issues using tools such as weighing scales, clinical thermometers, measuring tapes, blood pressure and blood sugar machines, and basic medical kits. Additionally, the promoters will utilize tablets for documenting, storing, and relaying critical health data about individuals they assist.

An important aspect of the CHP program is the provision of a monthly stipend of Sh. 5,000 for each promoter. This remuneration is intended to cover work logistics, marking a transition from their previous volunteer status. The governor noted that this initiative is part of a collaborative effort between the Kirinyaga County and national governments to establish robust health systems offering affordable and comprehensive care.

The introduction of CHPs has already led to a noticeable decrease in diseases such as malaria and waterborne illnesses in the county. Governor Waiguru highlighted the county’s focus on expanding its health network facilities at the grassroots level. This expansion includes the recent opening of nine new dispensaries, such as Matandara, Riakithiga Laboratory, and South Ngariama, among others. Additionally, the Kerugoya County Referral Hospital has been upgraded from Level 4 to Level 5, enhancing its capacity to provide advanced medical services.
