Somali forces kill 88 al-Shabaab militants

MOGADISHU— Somali security forces, backed by international partners, killed 88 al-Shabaab militants in the latest operation conducted in the country, an official has said.

Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala told state television that the security forces also recovered weapons and equipment that the extremists had been using to stage attacks in a vast forest in Juhay village in the Middle Shabelle region.

The operation was launched with prior intelligence about the presence of the militants who were grouping in the forest to plot attacks, Al-Adala said.

Government forces have conducted several operations in central Somalia in recent days against al-Shabaab, liberating several villages.
