Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ statement regarding Greece’s candidacy to the United Nations Security Council to”Apogevmatini” newspaper (Athens, 25.01.2023)

“Taking advantage of its multifaceted approach in foreign policy, Greece has already secured pledges of support in writing from 113 states in favor of its candidacy for election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-26 term.

Considering that the permanent members of the Security Council do not traditionally express their pledge to support candidates, we believe that the objective of our election is entirely achievable.

The successful outcome of this specific candidacy allows us to be optimistic regarding Greece’s candidacies for the other two principal UN bodies, the Human Rights Council (2028-30) and the presidency of the General Assembly (2035-36), both of which for the first time in its history.”
