Internally Displaced Persons Return to Loroum Province Amid Security Challenges

Loroum – Internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the towns of Titao and Sollé in Loroum province have returned to their localities, joining supply convoys delivering essential goods on Monday, February 19, and Thursday, February 22, 2024. This marks a significant movement within the region, facilitated by the Defense and Security Forces and volunteers for the defense of the homeland, amid ongoing security challenges.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the convoy, comprising several hundred vehicles, motorcycle taxis, and motorcycles, embarked from Ouahigouya around 7 a.m., reaching Titao in the evening after a journey that spanned several hours. The convoy’s arrival in Titao was notable, with the first vehicles arriving around 5 p.m. and continuing throughout the night under army escort. The goods delivered included a variety of essential items such as food, fuel, and other supplies. This operation also saw hundreds of IDPs deciding to return to Titao, with one resident expressing joy at seeing familiar faces for the first time in two years.

On Thursday, February 22, a segment of the convoy proceeded to Sollé, located 45 kilometers north, near the Malian border—a region particularly affected by the crisis. The Defense and Security Forces’ determination ensured safe passage through areas where terrorists were in ambush, culminating in a warm welcome by the Sollé populations, marking their first convoy reception since June 2023.

The mission concluded on the evening of Saturday, February 25, with the convoy returning to Ouahigouya, having successfully delivered essential supplies and reuniting families and communities. A truck driver, reflecting on the journey, praised the efficiency of the Defense and Security Forces and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland, acknowledging the difficulties of the journey but emphasizing the positive impact of their efforts.

The provision of basic necessities to the localities of Loroum province is a crucial step in addressing the dire security situation and represents a concerted effort to reclaim territory and support communities affected by displacement and conflict.
