Trans Nzoia Launches Committee to Monitor Ambitious Tree Planting Goal

Trans Nzoia, Kenya – A new committee tasked with overseeing tree planting efforts in Trans Nzoia County was launched today at the County headquarters. Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi, speaking at the inaugural event, emphasized the need for thorough documentation of tree planting activities to achieve the county’s goal of planting 11.9 million trees by the end of the year.

According to Kenya News Agency, the committee’s formation is pivotal for reaching the ambitious target and for promoting environmental responsibility among all Kenyans, not just governmental bodies. He highlighted the broader impact of environmental conservation efforts on combating climate change and urged the public to actively participate. The committee includes leaders from Departments, Community Based Organizations, Faith Based Organizations, and private partners. Following its launch, the committee has scheduled ongoing tree planting efforts to meet the county’s target.

Deputy County Commissioner Nicholas Kijuba called for cooperation among all agencies and outlined the need for organized plans to support the national goal of planting 15 billion trees. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the young trees to ensure the longevity of the planting efforts.

Eli Tinda, the Trans County Forester, reported that 2.8 million trees have been planted so far toward the county’s goal. He noted that the county operates 81 tree nurseries, with a significant stock of seedlings ready for planting, although mobilization remains a challenge. Henry Wanjala from the One Acre Fund disclosed that their nurseries hold over 2 million seedlings, available for five shillings each, contributing to the county’s planting initiative.
