Migori’s Affordable Mabera Housing Project Progresses to 36% Completion

MIGORI—The Affordable Mabera Housing project in Migori has reached 36% completion, announced Jared Buoga, the Director of Housing and Urban Development for the Nyanza Region. Speaking at the Migori Teacher’s Training College during the affordable housing project participation forum, Buoga revealed that the first phase of the project would include 60 housing units.

According to Kenya News Agency, feedback from public participation has been integral in shaping the project, with suggestions focusing on the privatization of house ownership by locals and the creation of job opportunities. The department is currently planning the second phase on an additional 2.5 acres in Kuria West Sub County. The housing projects in Kehancha, Kuria West Sub County, and Rongo have been contracted out, with construction at the mobilization stage.

Buoga also noted the State Department for Housing and Urban Development’s role in constructing markets as part of an economic stimulus program in collaboration with the Migori County government. Six market sites have been handed over to contractors, with ongoing construction that includes cold storage facilities for fish products from Lake Victoria.

The department is concluding the formulation of the Affordable Housing Regulations 2024, which will provide the necessary framework for implementing affordable housing programs and related infrastructure nationwide. These regulations aim to operationalize the Affordable Housing Act, ensuring clarity and prioritization of local residents in both housing allocation and material supply.

Migori County Commissioner David Gitonga emphasized the importance of public participation in refining the housing regulations. Despite some delays by contractors, the construction of affordable houses in Mabera is progressing smoothly, with concerted efforts from both the national and county governments to support the project’s completion.

Andrew Mwera, Migori County Chief Officer in charge of Lands, Housing, Physical Planning, and Urban Development, acknowledged the robust partnership between the national and county governments in advancing the county’s housing projects.
