Swakopmund: Health Ministry Cancels N.dollars 26 Million Neonatal Ward Tender Due to Incompletion

Swakopmund – The Ministry of Health and Social Services has terminated a significant tender, valued at N.dollars 26 million, designated for the construction of a neonatal health care facility in Swakopmund. This decision follows the failure of the contracted company to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe. The new facility, planned for the Swakopmund Hospital, was designed to include a 28-bed neonatal ward comprising various care levels and a mothers’ lodging unit. The existing infrastructure in Swakopmund only offers a maternal ward with limited neonatal incubators.

According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), who spoke to the media last Thursday, the tender was initially awarded in November 2020, with an expected completion date of February 2022. However, due to consistent delays and challenges with the contractor, the ministry resolved to cancel the contract. Dr. Shangula emphasized the critical nature of the project, citing the risks associated with transferring mothers and babies to Windhoek, a journey exceeding three hours. The termination, while regrettable, opens the way for a revised scope and the selection of a new contractor to finalize the construction, ensuring the much-needed facility serves the local community effectively.
