ADDIS ABABA: Agricultural programs in Ethiopia, including the 'Yelemat Trufat' movement, have shown tangible results in promoting food security and reducing poverty, according to regional state officials. Chief Administrators of Oromia and Sidama, Shemelis Abdissa and Desta Ledamo, respectively, made these remarks during a nine-month performance evaluation of the Prosperity Party's Executive Committee in Gorgora, Amhara Region.
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the Executive Committee conducted an extensive evaluation of efforts to ensure peace and sustainable development in Ethiopia, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in attendance. The government, led by the Prosperity Party, has focused on tapping into existing agricultural potential with strategies to improve seed supply, expand mechanized farming, and institute modern land management.
Prime Minister Abiy noted that crop production increased from 393 million quintals in 2015 to 506 million quintals in 2016. The 'Yelemat Trufat' and Green Legacy initiatives contributed to a 6.2 percent growth in the agriculture sector. Shemelis Abdisa highlighted that agricultural development has been crucial in improving livelihoods, transforming Ethiopia from a wheat importer to an exporter, and gaining global recognition for its Green Legacy Initiative. Desta Ledamo added that the 'Yelemat Trufat' program has been effective in ensuring nutritional sovereignty and reducing household poverty by promoting diverse food production activities.
The government plans to continue increasing agricultural productivity by expanding mechanization, introducing new technologies, and providing improved seeds and fertilizers. Shemelis also mentioned the ongoing efforts to make Ethiopia a hub of global industries through special economic zones and free trade areas. The National Home Grown Economic Reform has introduced policy reforms and created an environment conducive to foreign investment.
