Ministry of Social Action Supports Tomato Farming Initiative for IDPs in NamentengaWorld Bank Pledges Comprehensive Support for Ethiopia’s Economic Reforms

NAMENTENGA — On Friday, February 16, 2024, Abdoul Karim Tiendrébéogo, leading a delegation from the Ministry in charge of Social Action, visited a 5-hectare tomato production site operated by internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Namentenga province, North-Central region. This visit underscores the government’s commitment to supporting agricultural initiatives under the presidential ‘agrosilvopastoral offensive’.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Abdoul Karim Tiendrébéogo, the purpose of the visit was to observe firsthand the market gardening project designated for tomato cultivation by IDPs and to motivate the participants actively involved in this endeavor. The project, facilitated by the generosity of the Malgrnaba of Boulsa who provided the land, aims to foster sustainable livelihoods for displaced communities through agriculture.

The provincial director in charge of Agriculture, Mamadou Sidibé, shared details about the site’s capacity, noting its 5-hectare area and a well with a flow rate of approximately 17 cubic meters per hour. Sidibé highlighted the support extended to farmers during the previous wet season, which included the distribution of fertilizers, seeds, and technical guidance to enhance production.

During the visit, the Malgrnaba expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries for the project’s progress but also voiced concerns over delays, particularly with the construction of a water tower and the need for latrine facilities. He commended the IDPs and the broader community for their commitment to the project.

Bassouleymane Ouattara, the Secretary General of Namentenga province, conveyed the appreciation of the local authorities to the Malgrnaba of Nièga for donating the land and to the community for its engagement. Ouattara assured that the feedback regarding the need to expedite the completion of infrastructure works would be addressed promptly.

The visit from the Ministry of Social Action to the tomato production site by IDPs in Namentenga province highlights the collaborative efforts between the government, local authorities, and communities to promote agricultural development and resilience among displaced populations.

ADDIS ABABA — In a significant move towards bolstering Ethiopia’s economic landscape, the World Bank has pledged unwavering support for the nation’s development ambitions. This commitment was solidified during a meeting between Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, Mamo Mihretu, and their team with Victoria Kwakwa, the World Bank Vice President for East and South Africa.



According Ethiopian News Agency, the discussions focused on how the World Bank could assist Ethiopia in implementing its Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda, a set of ambitious plans aimed at revitalizing the nation’s economy. Finance Minister Ahmed Shide provided an overview of the recent progress in macroeconomic reforms to the Vice President, highlighting ongoing efforts in recovery, reconstruction, and DDR (Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration).



Victoria Kwakwa, representing the World Bank, reiterated the institution’s dedication to offering comprehensive support for Ethiopia’s developmental objectives. The engagement underscores a mutual interest in ensuring the successful implementation of Ethiopia’s reformative measures, promising a robust partnership in the pursuit of economic stability and growth.



The meeting between Ethiopian officials and the World Bank represents a pivotal step in the country’s efforts to enact significant economic reforms. By securing the support of a key international financial institution, Ethiopia is better positioned to navigate the challenges of implementing its Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda, aiming for a sustainable and inclusive economic future.
