Kisumu City to Host CECAFA Under-18 Boys Championship

Kisumu, Kenya – Kisumu City is preparing to host the Council for East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) Under-18 Boys Championships, set to commence on Saturday, November 25, and conclude on December 8. This year’s tournament marks a significant event for the city, known for its football legacy.

According to Kenya News Agency, the city takes great pride in hosting its first international soccer tournament in many years. “Kisumu City is no doubt the headquarters of football in the region, having produced many local and international football stars,” Prof. Nyong’o stated during a press conference at his City Hall office. He also expressed gratitude to the Sports Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Ababu Namwamba, the CECAFA Governing Council, and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for their approval to host the event.

The two-week tournament coincides with the county government’s preparations to be one of the host cities for the Africa Champions (AFCON) next year. Governor Nyong’o warmly invited all participating teams and officials to the tournament, which will be held at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium.

Kenya, the host nation, is in Group A, alongside Rwanda, Somalia, and Sudan. Group B comprises South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zanzibar. The opening match, scheduled for midday, will feature Somalia against Rwanda, while Kenya’s team, led by Salim Babu, will face Sudan in their group matches in Kisumu.

Governor Nyong’o assured visitors of their safety and security in Kisumu and encouraged local residents to warmly welcome the guests and support the national team by attending the matches in large numbers.

The FKF Chief Executive Officer Barry Otieno announced free entry at all venues for soccer enthusiasts. “I call upon football fans from the CECAFA region and Kenya, in particular, to support the teams,” Otieno said during his visit to Governor Nyong’o.

Furthermore, Governor Nyong’o revealed plans for significant renovations to the Moi Stadium, transforming it into an ultra-modern Olympic-like stadium. The press conference was also attended by CECAFA Marketing Manager Andrew Jackson, Nyanza Region FKF NEC member Joseph Andere, and Kisumu County Executive Member in charge of Sports Beatrice Odongo.
