UK Commits £100 Million to Somalia’s Development

London, UK – In a significant move to support Somalia’s development initiatives, the British Prime Minister, Mr. Rishi Sunak, has committed to investing £100 million in the country. This announcement was made during a meeting with the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The President presented Somalia’s strategic focus on transitioning from emergency aid to long-term development projects.

According to Somali National News Agency, this investment aims to bring enduring benefits to the Somali people and will fund development projects, economic infrastructure, and agricultural development in Somalia.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud addressed the challenges faced by the Somali people, including the ongoing famine that began in 2022 and the current crisis caused by rain floods displacing thousands of families. In response to these challenges, Mr. Sunak emphasized the UK’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s development. Additionally, President Hassan Sheikh highlighted Somalia’s potential in eradicating hunger and ensuring sustainable energy and agriculture at the International Conference on preventing food shortages and disasters. He noted the liberation of over 70 districts and areas rich in agricultural crops from Al-Shabaab terrorists, which had previously crippled production and denied freedom to local farmers.
