Burkina Faso Government to Regulate Social Media Content, Seeks Parental Involvement

Ouagadougou – The Burkinabè government, recognizing the opportunities social networks like TikTok offer, does not plan to ban them but aims to restrict access to inappropriate content for children, with support from parents and other stakeholders. This approach was outlined by Aminata Zerbo, Minister in charge of the Digital Transition.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Responding to a query from MP Sabine Ouédraogo on Tuesday about regulating TikTok, which she claimed hosts harmful content, including pornography, dangerous challenges, and acts of violence, Minister Zerbo emphasized the importance of monitoring and restricting access to such content for children. “Not everything is bad on TikTok and other social networks. Therefore, it would not be a question of banning but of monitoring and restricting the consumption of TikTok content that is not appropriate for our children,” Zerbo stated during the oral question session.

According to Minister Zerbo, completely banning access to social networks like TikTok is neither feasible nor desirable, given the benefits they offer in terms of social connectivity, information sharing, and professional networking. She noted that a total ban could lead to increased curiosity and attempts to circumvent restrictions.

Despite the benefits, the government recognizes the dark side of social networks, including addiction, psychological impacts leading to depression and isolation, and the spread of false information. To address these challenges, the government has implemented several measures, including raising awareness about responsible social network use, adopting and enforcing restrictive laws in case of violation of national values, and strengthening regulatory bodies such as the BCLCC, CIL, and ANSSI.

Beyond legal and technical means, Minister Zerbo called for parental and societal involvement in combating the adverse effects of social networks. She emphasized the need for parents to monitor their children’s internet usage, utilize “parental control” tools, engage in discussions about online content, and guide them on safe internet navigation.
