Niger Declares Avian Flu Epidemic in Niamey

NIAMEY — Authorities in Niger have announced an outbreak of avian flu in the city of Niamey, triggered by the H5N1 virus, according to a report by the Niger Press Agency. General Assoumane Abdou Harouna, the Governor of the Niamey region, issued a decree indicating that the capital and its surroundings within a 10-kilometer radius are affected by a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza.

According to Burkina Information Agency, all bird species susceptible to contracting or transmitting the H5N1 virus will be placed under the strict surveillance of veterinary services. These services are tasked with implementing prophylaxis measures outlined in existing regulations to curb the spread of the disease. The LABOCEL laboratory confirmed the presence of the virus on January 27, 2024, after it was detected in various bird species, including wild, farmed, and ornamental birds, which have shown a high mortality rate due to the infection.
