Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias’ message to the Greek Diaspora in Australia (“The Greek Herald”, 23.12.2022)

Greece and Australia are two countries so far apart in terms of geography, and yet so close if we consider that they share common principles and values.
Defending democracy and human rights, respecting the sovereign rights of every country, upholding International Law and the International Law of the Sea and UNCLOS, being committed to the peaceful settlement of disputes, and adhering to the United Nations Charter are some of the values that underpin our constructive cooperation.

At the same time, the two countries are linked by strong historical ties, forged in shared fights for democracy and freedom during the First and Second World Wars. Furthermore, they have established substantial and productive cooperation within international organizations, as well as multi-faceted bilateral relations with broad prospects, as I had the opportunity and honor to discuss at length with the Australian Foreign Minister, Marise Payne, during her official visit to Greece last December.

The thriving and dynamic Greek community in Australia which is active and develops its rich work in almost every city in the country has constituted an important aspect of bilateral relations, with a decisive contribution to mutual understanding, creative interaction, cordial friendship, and the strengthening of relations between Greece and Australia over time.
With their presence and work in the country that welcomed them when they emigrated from Greece and became their second home, Diaspora Greeks, with a vibrant vision of creation, as an integral part of Australian society, and with a fruitful contribution to Australia’s progress and prosperity, make us proud.
Through their energetic action and systematic promotion and support of Greece’s positions, Diaspora Greeks become “ambassadors” of our country and contribute to further strengthening our already strong ties of friendship and cooperation with Australia.

As Christmas approaches, season of hope and joy that the birth of the Lord symbolizes, I wholeheartedly wish the Greek Diaspora in Australia health, prosperity, creativity, happiness, personal and collective well-being, fulfillment of goals, and all the best.
