Sensitization Forum Encourages Artisanal Miners to Obtain Licenses

Turkana – Artisanal miners in Turkana County have been encouraged to apply for mining licenses at a recent sensitization forum on compliance. The County Government and the Centre for Environment, Justice and Development organized the event to promote legal and environmentally responsible mining practices.

According to Kenya News Agency, Regional Mining Officer Nahashon Cheboi emphasized the importance of acquiring licenses, explaining that they are crucial for reforming the mining sector. He stated that these licenses provide a legal framework for environmental protection and sustainable mining through self-regulation.

Director for Mineral Resources, Stanley Loter, cautioned against the use of hazardous chemicals like mercury and cyanide in extraction processes, highlighting the risks to human and livestock health. He also spoke about the importance of involving artisanal miners in public budgetary processes to increase funding for the mining sector.

Further initiatives discussed included the establishment of a modern gemstone center featuring a geo-laboratory and a lapidary center. This development is expected to add value to the sector and attract investors. The forum saw participation from various stakeholders, including representatives from the County Government, SOLIDARIDAD, the County Artisanal Miners Association (TCAM), and the Turkana County Artisanal Miners Committee (TCAMC).
