Thika’s Unique Preference for Bicycle Taxis Over Motorcycles

THIKA — In a notable departure from the national trend, Thika town has emerged as a unique enclave where bicycles are favored over the increasingly popular motorcycle-boda bodas for local transport. Despite the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recording a sharp increase in motorcycle registrations, from 186,434 in 2017 to 285,203 in 2021, Thika’s residents and commuters exhibit a strong preference for the more traditional and eco-friendly mode of transport.

According to Kenya News Agency, the sight of bicycles parked alongside motorcycles at boda boda stages is a common occurrence in Thika, reflecting a deeply ingrained culture of bicycle use for personal transport and livelihood. Kevin Maina, a bicycle taxi rider, shared with the Kenya News Agency (KNA) that for many in the rural outskirts of Thika who cannot afford motorcycles, bicycles not only offer a viable source of income but are also preferred by commuters for their affordability and perceived safety.

Maina emphasized that the lower cost of bicycle taxis, compared to motorized boda bodas, along with a lower risk of accidents, makes them an attractive option for daily travel within the town. Echoing this sentiment, David Wanjau, a resident of Kisii Estate in Makongeni, Thika, highlighted the safety advantages of bicycles, citing the high frequency of accidents associated with motorcycles and the cautious nature of bicycle taxi operators.

Charles Kimani, another bicycle taxi operator, pointed out the practical benefits of bicycles, such as their ability to navigate Thika’s narrow paths and terrain where motorcycles may struggle. Kimani also noted the flexible pricing based on distance and luggage, with fares ranging from Sh20 for short trips to Sh200 for longer journeys, allowing him to earn a decent daily income.

This preference for bicycles over motorcycles in Thika underscores a unique local transportation culture that prioritizes safety, affordability, and accessibility, challenging the dominant trend of motorized boda boda growth across Kenya.
