Fafi Constituency Implements Zero Fees Program to Boost Education

FAFI, Kenya – Fafi Member of Parliament Salah Yakub has initiated a groundbreaking zero-fee program for all secondary schools in his constituency. This initiative is designed to support the goal of achieving a 100 percent transition rate from primary to secondary education.

According to Kenya News Agency, who made the announcement at Nanigi Secondary School, the program aims to increase secondary school enrolment. This increase is expected to enhance the schools’ capitation funding from the government and improve teacher postings, thereby facilitating better access to education. At the event, Yakub distributed uniforms, boxes, mosquito nets, and other essential equipment to students joining Form One in Fafi Constituency. Additionally, he revealed plans to introduce a milk program next week, which will provide two packets of milk per school day to all local primary school pupils.

The MP also presented fee payment cheques to secondary school principals, emphasizing that no student in his constituency would be sent home due to a lack of fees. He stated, “For us to get the rightful share, we have to increase school enrollment so that we can compete favorably with schools from other parts of the country. This is why I found it worth starting this program for the second consecutive year.”

Yakub also called on the government to enhance security in the region, highlighting the challenges posed by frequent attacks by the Al Shabaab terror group. In response, Fafi Deputy County Commissioner Thomas Bett directed all chiefs and their assistants to ensure full school enrollment in their jurisdictions. Bett issued a stern warning against any chief found neglecting this government directive.

Additionally, Bett encouraged residents to report any information regarding terrorist activities, assuring them of prompt action by the authorities. The efforts in Fafi echo similar initiatives in the region, with Ijara MP Abdi Ali also running a zero school fee program. Furthermore, the Garissa County government has been providing sponsorships for students pursuing teaching courses, aiming to address the teacher shortage locally.

This collective effort among North Eastern leaders marks a significant campaign to increase school enrollment for children in the region, demonstrating a strong commitment to enhancing educational opportunities.
