Kenya Women’s Parliamentary Association Calls for Immediate Government Action on El Nino Rains

Nairobi, Kenya: The Kenya Women’s Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) is urging the government to take swift action in response to the El Nino rains wreaking havoc across the nation. This appeal highlights the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address the widespread impacts of the ongoing severe weather conditions.

According to Kenya News Agency, speaking at a press event in Stoni Athi, the situation has reached a critical point. Elachi called for the government to recognize the ongoing rainfall as a national disaster and stressed the importance of unity and collective action in addressing the El Nino rains. Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda reinforced Elachi’s message, emphasizing the need for prompt government intervention to safeguard the wellbeing of affected communities. Lesuuda highlighted the necessity of collaboration and resource sharing to support those affected, including those facing displacement and loss of livelihood. She also extended condolences to families who have lost loved ones due to the rains and urged adherence to safety guidelines from relevant agencies.

Mandera Women Representative Umulkheir Kassim criticized the government’s response, particularly for those in the northern regions of Kenya. She pointed out that these areas are isolated due to the heavy rains, leaving residents without essential supplies like food and medical aid. Kassim expressed concern about the risk of waterborne diseases and the need for consistent delivery of both food and non-food items to the marooned towns. She also noted the dire conditions in flooded areas, where women are struggling with childbirth and loss.

Kassim acknowledged the Kenya Red Cross’s efforts to aid affected families but called for greater collaboration from both state and non-state entities. This meeting of legislators coincided with President William Ruto’s address to journalists at the state house in Nairobi, where he discussed the challenges posed by the heavy rainfall. President Ruto announced plans for a crisis cabinet meeting on Monday, November 27, to address the ongoing situation.

In response to the flooding, particularly in Northern Kenya, the government has allocated approximately 2 billion Kenyan shillings as a mitigation measure. This funding aims to support populations severely impacted by the floods.
