Committee on Flood Disaster Relief and Recovery to Inspect Progress in Limpopo Province

Polokwane, Limpopo – The Ad Hoc Joint Committee on Flood Disaster Relief and Recovery is set to conduct a crucial oversight visit to the Limpopo Province this week. The visit, as stated in a new release by the Committee, aims to assess the progress made in providing government assistance for flood disaster relief and recovery following the floods that occurred earlier this year.

According to Parliament of South Africa, The oversight visit will commence on Tuesday, 14 November 2023, in the Polokwane Local Municipality within the Capricorn District. The day’s activities will begin at 09:00 with an official opening of the program at the Polokwane Council Chamber. This session will include a briefing by the Limpopo Premier, Provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Provincial Department of Human Settlements, Provincial Department of Social Development, Capricorn District Municipality, and Polokwane Local Municipality. The Chairperson and Limpopo Political Principals will lead the opening and introductions.

Following the opening session, the committee will conduct site visits to three key projects affected by the floods: Christina Bridge, Madietane Bridge, and Buite Clinic Road. All delegates are expected to participate in these site visits, which will provide firsthand insight into the current state of recovery efforts.

On the second day of the visit, Wednesday, 15 November 2023, the Committee will move to the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality in the Mopani District. The day’s program will also start at 09:30 with an official opening that includes introductions and presentations by the Mopani District Mayor and the Greater Tzaneen Mayor in Tzaneen. This will be followed by further site visits by all delegates.

The oversight visit by the Committee is a significant step in ensuring transparency and accountability in the government’s flood disaster relief and recovery efforts. It also highlights the commitment to supporting the affected communities in the Limpopo Province and evaluating the effectiveness of the measures taken to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters.
