AU Executive Council Initiates Deliberations on Upcoming Senior Leadership Elections


Addis Ababa – The Executive Council of the African Union, comprising Ministers of Foreign Affairs, convened an extraordinary session at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa to review preparations for the election of its senior leadership set for February 2025.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, this session marked the beginning of discussions aimed at shaping the future leadership of the organization, which includes the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Deputy Chairperson, and six Commissioners. Mauritania’s Foreign Minister and Chairperson of the Executive Council, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, highlighted the importance of the elections in enhancing the AU’s role in peace, security, and international influence, as well as meeting the aspirations of the continent’s people. He urged member states to collaborate in addressing global challenges and efficiently utilizing the continent’s natural resources for the benefit of its populations. The council’s discussions also covered electoral modalities, including regional rotation and gender parity, ahead of the 2025 leadership transition.
