Mozambique – Update, Northern Mozambique Situation, November 2021

More than 745,000 people fled their homes in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique due to violence perpetrated by non-state armed groups. UNHCR reiterates concern for the protection and humanitarian needs of displaced and host communities in Cabo Delgado and neighboring provinces.

UNHCR and partners inaugurated two multipurpose centres in Metuge District for the provision of protection services to displaced and host communities. Five additional multipurpose centres are being constructed in the districts of Chiure, Montepuez and Mueda in Cabo Delgado.

UNHCR and partners distributed Core Relief Items to 400 families in Chiure and provided Identity Documents to over 1,200 people from displaced and host communities in Metuge.

Additional funding is urgently required to continue scaling up humanitarian activities in Northern Mozambique.

Monthly Highlights

New Multipurpose Centres, Cabo Delgado: UNHCR inaugurated two Multipurpose Centres in Ntokota and Ngalane IDP sites, Metuge District. The Multipurpose Centres are community facilities where UNHCR, partners, Protection Focal Points (PFPs) and community activists provide services and assistance to displaced and host communities, particularly vulnerable individuals such as GBV survivors, the elderly, and people with disabilities. UNHCR partner Doctors with Africa – CUAMM, uses the spaces to provide mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) and conducts awareness raising activities to prevent and respond to GBV incidents, particularly intimate partner violence and early marriage. The Multipurpose Centres include one large room for group activities, two rooms for individual support sessions, one room for staff, and latrines for women and men. Five additional centers are being constructed in the districts of Chiure, Montepuez and Mueda.

Core Relief Items (CRIs) distribution, Cabo Delgado: UNHCR and partner Caritas distributed CRIs to 400 families at 3 de Fevereiro and Natuco IDP sites in Chiure District. The distribution included sleeping mats, blankets, buckets, mosquito nets and jerry cans and was conducted in line with COVID-19 preventing measures.

Legal assistance and access to documentation, Cabo Delgado: On 26 November local authorities, UNHCR and partner Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM) participated on a symbolic ceremony to distribute 100 ID cards out of 1,200 distributed in November 2021 in Pemba. UNHCR also donated two printers to UCM to support the mobile legal clinic.

16 Days of Activism Against GBV, Cabo Delgado: Together with local authorities, partners and GBV service providers, UNHCR supported in the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV launching ceremony under the theme “End Violence Against Women and Girls” in Pemba. UNHCR organized recreational activities in several districts and a march in the city of Pemba involving over 50 women from local and displaced communities to raise awareness on services available to GBV survivors and referral pathways. UNHCR and CUAMM conducted an information session on Inter-Agency Standing Committee GBV Mainstreaming Guidelines to all clusters focusing on (i) core concepts; (ii) results of Safety Audits; (iii) guidance on support to referrals and mainstreaming risk reduction; (iv) and aimed at the inclusion of GBV components on all clusters 2022 planning.
